Japan Embassy Demonstration 2010 Print E-mail

This year, as last year, we were honoured to demonstrate MJER Iaido at the Japanese Embassy in Pretoria at the Embassy's annual Martial Arts Demonstration. Sempai Maarten van Bemmel, Rodney Sloan and Basil Jordan demonstrated various waza from the Seiza and Batto ho categories.

The Demonstration is a major event in our Dojo's calendar with much preparation done before the day. Other martial arts on display included Karate, Judo, Kendo, Aikido and Ryukyu Kobujutsu.

For pictures from last year's demonstration, check out the Dojo's Facebook page.

Congratulations to Philip on achieving your Shodan!

We are now officially linked to the ZNIR through Esaka Dojo. It was great to meet Esaka-sensei himself and receive instruction from him and other sensei prior to my grading. I have also met iaidoka from the USA and Chech. I hope that you all will be able to experience Japan in future as well. Check out the photo's here

2ND ANNUAL MUSO JIKIDEN EISHIN-RYU IAIDO SEMINAR: REPORT BACK

This September, Katsujinken Kai Dojo hosted its second annual Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū Iaido seminar. We were once again privileged to have Raju Thakrar-sensei (7th Dan) of the Esaka Dojo in Tokyo as our visiting instructor. This year’s seminar stretched over a week with a total of twelve students participating – almost double last year’s attendance.

Unlike the previous seminar, which spanned a weekend, this year’s seminar took place over the course of seven days, focussing specifically on waza performed from a seated position (seiza no bu). Despite a gruelling schedule, the seminar was an invaluable learning experience for all participants, providing some idea of what training might be like in Japan.

The 2007 MJER seminar greatly renewed enthusiasm, and Thakrar-sensei left behind a group of motivated, improved and highly enthusiastic iaidoka (albeit ones with sore knees!) With such excellent instruction and dedication, iaido in this country can only go from strength to strength.
